Description

HICOX 400mg Tablet contains Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride equivalent to Moxifloxacin 400mg,

A broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for the treatment of certain susceptible bacterial infections.  The official Triafa Pharmaceuticals product list identifies HICOX 400mg Tablets as containing Moxifloxacin HCl. Pakistani government medicine records also list HICOX as Moxifloxacin 400mg tablet, while regulatory documentation identifies the tablet as containing Moxifloxacin (as HCl) 400mg. Moxifloxacin 400mg tablets work by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes required for bacterial DNA replication and repair. This antibacterial action makes Moxifloxacin useful for selected respiratory and other bacterial infections when treatment with a fluoroquinolone is considered appropriate. HICOX should be used only when prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional because fluoroquinolone antibiotics can cause potentially serious adverse effects.

Key Benefits

  • Contains Moxifloxacin 400mg.
  • Broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
  • Used for susceptible bacterial infections.
  • Available as a convenient oral tablet.
  • Works by interfering with essential bacterial DNA enzymes.
  • May be prescribed for selected respiratory and other bacterial infections.
  • Suitable only for infections where Moxifloxacin is clinically appropriate.

How It Works

Moxifloxacin inhibits two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair and cell division.

By blocking these enzymes, Moxifloxacin interferes with bacterial DNA production and ultimately causes the death of susceptible bacteria.

Uses / Therapeutic Applications

HICOX 400mg may be prescribed for selected susceptible bacterial infections, including certain:

  • Bacterial respiratory tract infections
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute bacterial sinusitis in appropriate circumstances
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis when specifically indicated
  • Certain skin and soft-tissue infections
  • Other bacterial infections where Moxifloxacin is considered an appropriate treatment

Because of important fluoroquinolone safety concerns and increasing antibiotic resistance, Moxifloxacin should not routinely be used for minor infections when safer effective alternatives are available.

Directions for Use

Take HICOX 400mg exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

  • Usually taken once daily, according to the prescribed regimen.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with sufficient water.
  • It may generally be taken with or without food.
  • Take it at approximately the same time each day.
  • Complete the prescribed course unless your doctor tells you to stop.

Do not take HICOX together with antacids or mineral supplements containing aluminum, magnesium, iron or zinc at the same time, as these can reduce Moxifloxacin absorption. Follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions regarding the appropriate time interval.

Precautions

  • HICOX is a prescription antibiotic.
  • Do not use if you have previously experienced a serious reaction to Moxifloxacin or another fluoroquinolone.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of tendon problems associated with quinolone antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor about heart rhythm problems or medicines that may prolong the QT interval.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy or a history of seizures.
  • Use caution in patients with diabetes because fluoroquinolones can affect blood glucose.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking corticosteroids, as the combination can increase tendon-related risks.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use for viral infections such as common cold or influenza.
  • Avoid unnecessary exposure to intense sunlight or UV radiation if you develop photosensitivity.

Important Fluoroquinolone Warning

Moxifloxacin and other fluoroquinolones can rarely cause serious and potentially long-lasting adverse reactions, including tendon inflammation or rupture, peripheral neuropathy, serious nervous-system effects and significant heart-rhythm abnormalities.

Stop taking the medicine and seek medical advice promptly if you develop tendon pain or swelling, severe muscle or joint symptoms, numbness/tingling, unusual weakness, severe mood or neurological changes, fainting or a rapid/irregular heartbeat.

Possible Side Effects

Commonly reported side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

More serious adverse reactions can include tendonitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, QT prolongation/arrhythmia, severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, liver injury and antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

Seek immediate medical attention if you develop difficulty breathing, severe rash, fainting, severe diarrhea, tendon pain/swelling or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

Drug Interactions

Moxifloxacin can interact with several medicines and supplements. Important examples include:

  • Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
  • Iron supplements
  • Zinc-containing supplements
  • Certain antiarrhythmic medicines
  • Other medicines that prolong the QT interval
  • Corticosteroids
  • Certain medicines affecting blood glucose
  • Warfarin and other medicines requiring careful monitoring

Always provide your doctor or pharmacist with a complete list of medicines and supplements you are taking.
